The Waves

When coming to Rote with the intention to surf, everyone can find what they are looking for. The most famous waves wave would be T-land (Besialu Reef). T-land is a long left hander with three main sections that work best with the trade winds and on all tides. The best time of the year to surf T-land and the many other breaks in this area is usually around March to November when the wind is offshore.

There are many other waves (lefts and rights) breaking along Nembrala coastline as well as in Bo’a and the uninhabited islands nearby which are accessible by boat. Depending on the winds, waves and tides we are happy to make sure you get the best of surf during your stay with us — so don’t hesitate to ask us for some guidance!

Bo'a

The right tide for this wave is either low coming in or the outgoing one. This is a right-hander reef break so watch out for sharp reef and rocks. As to swell direction this wave prefers a South swell direction with offshore winds coming from the North-Northwest. Depending on its power, this wave can form beautiful barrels or be easy and gentle for those still learning.

Dana

The surf is uncrowded at Dana all year around. It’s a wave close to a military base, a small island right in front of Rote called Dana. This is a left-hander reef break that requires a solid swell. It has an easy take off spot but watch out as it breaks into a barrel on the shallower part of the reef. You can only access this wave by boat.

Nembrala (Squealers)

This is the perfect wave for beginner surfers. It’s a soft rolling wave near the shore, which breaks on a higher tides.

Oeseli

This is a heavy barrelling left-hander, which needs a solid swell to work properly. It’s off the coast near Nirwana and a local boat can be rented to get there.

Do'o

Also an intense right-hander on the Southern tip of the inhabited island Do’o. You will need to rent a boat to get to this wave.

Sucky Mamas

It’s a hollow right-hander with some great barrels. It’s best on a rising midtide or a hightide going out. To reach this boat you will also need to rent a boat.
